Leading an organization, large or small, is not easy, and this road can sometimes be lonesome. Authenticity has become the gold standard for leadership.
The word “authentic” traditionally referred to any work of art that is an original, not a copy. When used to describe it in the context of leadership, of course, it has other meanings.
Bill George author of the famous book – “Authentic Leadership: Rediscovering the Secrets to Creating Lasting Value” challenged a new generation to lead authentically. In his opinion – Authentic leaders demonstrate a passion for their purpose, practice their values consistently, and lead with their hearts and heads. They establish long-term, meaningful relationships and have the self-discipline to get results. They know who they are.
During the past five decades, leadership scholars have conducted more than 1,000 studies to determine great leaders’ styles, characteristics, or personality traits. But unfortunately, none of these studies has produced a clear profile of the ideal leader.
Fortunately, there isn’t a cookie-cutter leadership style, or authentic leadership wouldn’t have existed. Individuals would be forever trying to imitate it. No one can be authentic by trying to imitate someone else.
You can learn from other’s experiences, but there is no way you can be successful when you are trying to be like them. People trust you when you are genuine and authentic, not a replica of someone else.
The best investment you can make is in yourself .
